First dates are intimidating and most people get at least a little bit nervous when the day comes around. For men in particular, dressing for that all-important first date can be a challenge, but if you want your first date to lead to a second, do put in the extra effort and it will pay off. Here are some tips on how to dress to impress.
Dress for the Occasion
What you choose to do on your first date will determine what you should wear. If you are going for dinner, it’s safe to assume that your date will dress up nicely, so you should too. You don’t need to wear a suit, but dark jeans, a white shirt and a dark suit jacket is a reliable combination that looks both suave and sophisticated without being overly formal. For less formal settings such as a coffee date or lunch, you can dress more casually, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t put in any effort. Tracksuits and baggy hoodies are not the way to go if you want to look well. A good pair of jeans and a cool t shirt or casual shirt can be enough to do the trick. If the weather’s cold, try wearing a nice jacket or even a good hoodie, but make sure this outerwear matches whatever you wear underneath.
Feel Confident in What You Wear
You want your date to like you for who you are, so make sure you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you choose to wear. Have a look in your wardrobe and put together a nice outfit from the clothes you have rather than going out and buying clothes for your date. You may feel self-conscious on a first date in a new, unfamiliar get-up. However, that doesn’t mean you should wear tattered runners and your musty old jacket. If you put in the effort, it will show that you care about the date and want it to go well.
As for your hair, it’s best not to do anything radically different to what you usually do. You know how you like your hair and how best to style it. A first date isn’t the time to experiment as you want to make sure you feel good about your appearance.
A spray of good cologne is a nice final touch, but remember that less is more. Many men overdo on the cologne, leaving a trail of overpowering scent after them wherever they go. You don’t want your date to suffocate on your cologne, so be sure to apply it sparingly.
With these tips in mind, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t look sharp for that first date and, hopefully, have it turn into a second date.
