According to the a study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, younger millennials (born in the 1990s) are more than twice as likely to be sexually active in their early 20’s than Gen X’ers were.  On June 5th, Mitchell Royél (born Mitchell Carlisle Abbott) revealed to his supporters that for spiritual reasons, he has chosen to abstain from sex and is still a virgin. Royél also urged his sexuality active supporters to use protection in the event that they decide to engage in sex.

“I’ve got pure heart and a dirty mind. I’m saving it. Call me superstitious, but I believe sexual intercourse is an energetic exchange. I value the authentic essence of my soul and honestly, don’t want it modified. Recently, I dated someone who cut me off romantically after I revealed to them that at 26, I was a virgin. They couldn’t understand how someone of my stature hadn’t given into temptation. We’re still friends, but for awhile after I got dumped, I felt disempowered, somewhat ashamed and unlovable. For the first time in my life, my innocence was making me feel like less of a man. But then, like a ton of bricks it hit me. It’s not that I’m necessarily committed to remaining a virgin.

What I’m actually standing for, is authentic, unconditional love with the right person. Too often the word promiscuous is interpreted as being synonymous with sex appeal. Now forward, I want to positively impact the perception of playing it safe. Keep protection with you anytime there’s a chance of sex. Don’t drop protection because he/she says it feels better. Practice using positive language. For example: “I want to talk about this because I care deeply about my mind, body and soul.” Work together to get the protection you both need. Her latest accessory is a pair of enormous black visor sunglasses covering her face from the middle of her forehead, right down to her cheeks. Whilst her new celebrity status as one half of superstar couple with Kanye West may  mean that she has to live up to the celebrity image, these paparazzi-proof glasses are bordering on the quirkiness of Lady Gaga’s style.  It should also be mentioned that Miss Kardashian wore these giant sunglasses in London… in winter. She teamed these specs with long leather trench coat and thigh-high black pointed boots to complete the look.

But Kim is no stranger to bizarre eyewear. She posted a photo of herself in a pair of oversized John Lennon style glasses, similar to the dark tinted round sunglasses Lady Gaga famously wore. Though Kardashian would probably never admit it, perhaps the two celebs have a sense of style more in common than they think…

In 2011, both she and her sister, Kourtney, were spotted in oversized Tom Ford Alessandra 0094 sunglasses with huge bug-eye style frames similar to this D&G pair.

In fact, it appears Kim will wear any glasses shape, so long as they are oversized and make a bold style statement. Kim has even teamed up with her sisters to create their own range of eyewear called the ‘Kardashian Kollection’, available in Sears Opticians. The glasses are as feminine and stylish as you would expect from the Kardashians and come in variety of tortoiseshell, animal print and black acetate frames.  As for the sunglasses in the range, they are of course, oversized. They feature large dark lenses in cat eye, square and aviator frame shapes. It is clear from looking at the designs that the details have been carefully considered, with each style making a different bold statement. For example, one pair is in the classic aviator shape with delicate gold frame and leopard print detailing for a feminine take on the iconic style. For a different look, the girls have created a striking pair with huge oversized square lenses in a black frame with unique silver arm detailing. The overall impression is futuristic and fashion-forward, something Kim would definitely consider wearing.

So whilst her thigh-high boots and leather trench coat may not be for the faint-hearted, the Kardashians’ range of eyewear is versatile enough for everyone to wear.

Like all other fashion trends these have been recycled a few decades down the line, and have reappeared in the form of sunglasses. Oversized sunglasses were first seen on the likes of Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton on their series The Simple Life, and are now a common summer fashion commodity.

Changing Contestant’s Style

If you’ve ever watched the episode the show runs every year when the judges select their acts for the live shows in what has come to be an annual tear-fest, you will have noticed that each of the contestants will receive a makeover before they move on to the main competition. In odd cases, the X Factor stylists have improved upon a singer’s dress sense, more often than not, they destroy people’s personal style. Take 2010 winner Matt Cardle for example; the singer-songwriter had a unique and interesting style based on 90’s grunge fashion with a contemporary take. After he progressed to the live shows, the X Factor stylists proceeded to take remove any originality or personality from Cardle’s dress sense and stuck him in boring jumpers or plain shirts. Sometimes, the contestant might actually know best.

Lack of Originality

The fact of the matter is, people will take what contestants wear on the X Factor and use it to govern their own style. What this means is that the X Factor has a large influence over what the general public wears and how they think about fashion. Yeah after year, the X Factor dress their contestants the same way, boy bands like JLS and One Direction are kitted out in recycled chinos and desert scarves whilst the older contestants are given the same corny blazer and trouser combinations in some sort of feeble attempt to make them appeal to mothers and grandmothers. The fact that the X Factor doesn’t innovate with its contestant’s wardrobe choices means there is a large part of the population who are dressing in redundant clothing styles.

Not Inspiring the Older Generation

In all fairness, most of the judges and hosts of the X Factor cannot be faulted for their style. Dermot O’Leary will turn out each week in a stylish, well cut suit and Gary Barlow has sported some great looks, including his regular demonstrations on the perfect way to wear a waistcoat. The problem is Louis Walsh and how the programme’s wardrobe department style him. Walsh is 60, but this is no excuse for poor style choices. Instead of setting an example for his generation that you’re never too old to care about your dress sense, Louis is usually clothed in boring, ill-fitting suit jackets and often has his hair gelled in a manner that would look ridiculous on most teenagers 45 years his junior. If Louis dressed his age, whilst staying on trend, he may inspire more men his age to regain their interest in fashion.

Since debuting at fourteen, she has worked for Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton, as well as appearing on numerous “Vogue” covers internationally.

The differences between these models, all of whom have made it big in the fashion world, show that there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to what it takes to be a model.    One of the most obvious things about Katy Perry’s look is that she will rarely be seen, whilst on stage or conducting publicity, in trousers preferring instead to wear either crazy print dresses, leotards (on stage) or high-waist short shorts. In doing so Perry is able to both show off her well-toned legs and also draw further attention to her shoes which often play an integral part to her look. Whilst already standing five feet nine tall, the I Kissed a Girl singer is particularly keen on adding further inches to her height; she is more often than not seen in towering heels, platforms or wedges. Usually Perry plumps for bold colours, subtle certainly is not her style, and will often team neon heels with a differently coloured neon latex dress. Similarly bold statement shoes worn recently include metal-clad wedges and multi-coloured platforms.

   Katy does, however, change her look dependent on the formality of the event she is attending and will often plump for designer brands, including recently Dolce & Gabbana, when attending award shows, movie premiers or similarly formal occasions. Despite the designer dresses, Perry will often stand out from the crowd due to her propensity to team these ensembles with boldly dyed hair (often blue or pink) which provide an eye catching juxtaposition with her printed dress designs and killer heels.

   When shopping for Perry-esque clothing the key is to look for floral prints, a hugely fashionable trend this season, 40s retro glamour or, another massively popular style in part due to Perry herself, colour blocked combinations. Primary colours and self-consciously quirky designs are fantastic for aping her style and anything featuring Hello Kitty or other Asian characters will always make for a great hit. Miniskirts and figure hugging dresses can help accentuate the womanly side of the wearer and, another tip, is approach accessories in the same way the rest of the outfit is put together; with no subtlety at all! Waist-cinching belts provide the benefits of both enhancing the figure and also breaking up an outfit with more detail. Brightly coloured lipstick can help increase the cartoonish nature of the ensemble and novelty shaped sunglasses, hair accessories and peacock ear rings are all extras that can only add more zaniness to the look. With Perry there is no such thing as minimalism – this style dressing suggests that the more fun things a person can wear at once, the more fun their look will be!

   In short Perry’s look is fun and playful, never taking its self t seriously, sassy and sexy but yet also highly attainable. Just like Perry initially cultivated her style through being thrifty and through charity shop scouring, her look is easy to get with a little bit of work and perseverance.

   The Spice Girls were, to be frank, absolute fashion disasters when they first appeared in the mid 1990s. Their cartoonish image may have seemed okay at the time but looking back at the troupe no it seems hard to fathom until the realisation dawns that, in comparison to their contemporaries, they were no worse dressed than anybody else in that decade. Although the 1980s is often maligned as perhaps the worst dressed decade in history, it does not take much analysis to realise that the years that succeeded it were far worse. The 1990s, a decade which begun with the anti-fashion of grunge, ended with an era in which orange lined bombed jackets and baseball caps balanced at unwieldy angles were considered the absolute pinnacle of high fashion.

   For men, the nineties represented something of a period of uncertainty as several trends had come to an end at once with no one trend, but instead an amalgamation, propping up to replace them. In Britain, 1960s style mod clothing saw something of a revival due to the success of Britpop and bands such as Oasis yet this movement also corresponded with American hip-hop becoming mainstream leading to their styles being imported. Sports brands managed to get their clothing, previously fashionable only on the field of play, to become regularly spotted on the high street and, doe to the muddled up ensembles, British men spent ten years looking like a fancy dress costume gone wrong. It was not unusual, in this period, to see men teaming Tottenham Hotspurs replica kit shirts with fishermen hats and aviators, bombers jackets and Adidas pop-open tracksuit bottoms. At this point it seemed like the simple elegance of a Cary Grant style outfit would never return.

   For women, the time was not much better in the fashion stakes. Feminine styles at this point were unheard of; anybody who wished to dress in the understated look of an Audrey Hepburn or even, to use a more modern example, Zooey Deschanel would have been in the minority. Instead, denim was its most popular to the degree where it was not unheard of for women, including Kate Moss, wearing Bryan Adams-esque double denim (jeans and jacket) to be considered at the apex of style. Sneakers also replace heels and court shoes as the most popular style of shoe and combat pants were preferred to dresses which, when worn, were expected to display their designer label as garishly as possible in a vulgar display of showing how much the cheap looking outfit cost. Turtlenecks, once the domain of unpublished student poets, were also seen regularly in celebrity style guides and, for the less conservative, crop tops (tank tops revealing the midriff) were at their most popular. Sports clothes were more regularly seen than maxi dresses at this point.

   Despite the fact that “sports-casual” (a term which is actually shorthand for “scruffily dressed”) went mainstream in the 1990s, perhaps it was a team of sportsmen who were attempting to dress in the most stylish way they could imagine possible which really represents the worst excesses of the decade, the nadir of style. Prior to the 1996 FA Cup final against Manchester United, Liverpool FC decided to go against the grain and wear a pre-match outfit that was sure to strike fear into the hearts of their opponents. The team, in an event seen by millions around the world, took to the field in matching cream white Armani suits which earned them eternal ridicule despite being perhaps an inevitable conclusion to the fashions of the time. That they were christened the “Spice Boys” in reference to Victoria Beckham’s troupe, was a perfectly fitting testament to perhaps the worst dressed girl’s group of all time. The fact the Spice Girls were not widely ridiculed for their taste in clothes at the time is perhaps a fitting testament to the worst dressed decade in modern civilization.

1. Fergie

Is there a face under those bangs? We know that bangs are popular and back in style, but rocking bangs from the early 90s isn’t an acceptable look, especially when they appear to be striped in different colors. Not only do they just look awful, but they do nothing to highlight Fergie’s natural beauty. They’re too big for her face, making them somewhat overwhelming. Sorry, Fergie, but these bangs do not make you look G.L.A.M.O.R.O.U.S.

2. Ke$ha

This Lady Gaga wannabe is known to pull off some strange looks just to get attention, and we were really hesitant in adding her to this list, but we couldn’t ignore the hot mess on top of her head. Why would she intentionally want to look this bad? This hairstyle is a combination of bed head meets mohawk meets multiple bottles of superglue and Aquanet meets placing a finger into an electrical socket. If you were going for completely awful, congratulations. You succeeded.

3. Christina Aguilera

Poor Christina has been a fashion victim from day one, but poor choices just continue to run in her stylists’ vision. We know this picture is old, but who could forget this ‘do? It appears that Christina was going for a poodle/Medusa combination to achieve this look. Plus, the large volume of this look does not complement her short and thin frame, which makes it even worse. We feel sorry for whoever had to sit behind her at the awards show that night.

4. Scarlett Johansson

Hello mullet. We never thought that such a beautiful woman could make such poor fashion decisions, but Scarlett Johansson proves us wrong. This look may have been a classic in the 80s, but we thought (and were hoping) that it died there too. Even a pretty girl can’t pull off business in the front and party in the back. Thankfully, this awful cut didn’t last long.

5. Jay Manuel

Women aren’t the only ones making poor hairstyle choices. You would think that someone who works in fashion for a living would have better taste, but the silver bullet hair color is just downright awful. We understand that now it is part of his persona, but we’re pretty sure the hair dye manufacturer that makes that color has only sold it to one individual. You’ve rocked the silver long enough, Jay. Try something new. Please.
