What Special Features Does A Dive Watch Have?

First and foremost, a dive watch needs to be water resistant.  In order to qualify for the minimum ISO 6425 standard, a dive watch must be water resistant to at least 100m (you can expect better quality watches to be water resistant up to at least 300m).  Dive watches must also be resistant to water pressure, which increases the deeper you dive and to guard against water ingress, really good quality dive watches have screwed down crowns to create a tighter seal.  You also need to be able to see the minute hands on a dive watch clearly, so a good dive watch will have a luminous dial and clearly visible hands if it is not digital.

Why is a Dive Watch So Important?

A dive watch is not essential, but it is very useful and can make the difference between a safe dive and a disastrous one.  Dive watches are designed to give you essential information while you are underwater: typically how long you have been down and therefore how much longer your air supply is likely to last.  You could of course take a guess on these things, but that would hardly be very sensible, particularly if you are diving at any great depth.

Why is Gauging Remaining the Air Supply So Vital?

When the air runs out, you need to ascend to the surface in order to breathe and if you are several hundred meters below, you are likely to be unconscious before you ever get there.  However, you will also want to make the most of the time you do have underwater, exploring reefs, taking pictures of amazing aquatic marine life and testing your skills diving through a wreck, so heading up to the surface too soon is not ideal.  With this in mind, a dive watch can tell you exactly how long you have been underwater and how long you have left before you need to head back up to the surface.

Using a Dive Watch to Calculate the Elapsed Dive Time

Some dive watches can calculate the elapsed time automatically as soon as a diver starts to descend but not all of them do this.  For other dive watches, the bezel is normally twisted at the beginning of a dive so that the arrow is aligned with the minute hand of the watch.  As the dive progresses, the diver keeps a close eye on how far the minute hand of his dive watch has moved away from the bezel marker, which tells him exactly what the elapsed dive time is.

The bezel on a dive watch is the key to calculating elapsed dive time, but unlike other watches, the bezel on a dive watch can only be twisted anti-clockwise.  In case you are wondering, there is a very good reason for this.  Because the bezel can only move in one direction, this eliminates the possibility of accidentally extending the dive time and leaving the diver with no air supply.  If the bezel is inadvertently knocked on a dive watch, the dive time would be decreased rather than increased, which would be an inconvenience but certainly not life threatening.

How Do I Know if a Dive Watch is Suitable for the Purpose?

All dive watches are manufactured in accordance with ISO 6425, which means they are subjected to rigorous testing before being sold as dive watches.  Watches suitable for diving are designated as “divers” watches, which distinguishes them from inferior watches that are not suitable for the purpose.

What are the Alternatives to Dive Watches?

Dive computers are the sophisticated version of a traditional dive watch, and if you are a serious scuba diver, you may wish to invest in a purpose designed dive computer.  Many dive computers are integrated into the air supply, which means the computer is able to track a diver’s air consumption throughout the dive.  This helps to eliminate any uncertainties about how long the air supply is going to last under a variety of different diving conditions, which should make the dive a lot safer.

Investing in Watches

I love collecting watches and some of the classic and vintage styles are my favourites.  However collecting watches can be an expensive hobby and I don’t have a very large budget.  What I try to do is look around the market for some bargains.  One of my favourite ways to buy classic or vintage designer watches is through auctions.  I look both online and in traditional auction houses for those second hand watches that are looking a bit worse for wear. These are often available at quite reasonable prices.  Once I have snapped up a bargain I then tidy up the worn timepieces with a quick clean and brand new watch straps.  In many cases just changing the straps alone can make a big difference and this can be an affordable way to collect designer watches.  Here are a few tips if you are thinking about buying from the second hand market:

1. Clock Mechanism

One of the most important tips when buying second hand watches is to check that they actually work.  Some watches will just need a new battery but others may need some serious repair work. Parts for the big name designer watches can be expensive and repair bills can be quite steep.  Unless you can repair watches yourself you may actually end up out of pocket if you buy a watch that is broken.

2. Reputable Suppliers

I do use online auction sites for watches and this can be a great place to find a bargain. However you do need to be very careful.  Private listings cannot offer you any real guarantees if the designer watch turns out to be broken or fake.  By using reputable online sellers you can be more certain that the watch you are buying is as advertised and that your consumer rights are protected.

Changing a Watch Band

Once I have bought second hand designer watches I carefully give them a clean.  I have some basic watch repair tools which I can use to dismantle the watch so that I can clean the glass and internal surfaces.  It is amazing how much dirt can accumulate in these small spaces over the years.  I don’t try to carry out any complex repairs myself though as I have learnt from experience that without the right skills you can do more harm than good.

The next step is to change watch straps.  The strap of the watch can wear a lot over time particularly if it is made from leather or fabric.  Metal bracelet straps can also wear and this can make the watch look tired and out-dated. Fortunately there are a wide range of replacement straps available online.  You could opt for a similar strap to that one already with the watch or you could buy something completely different to upgrade the whole look.

Find the Strap for You

When choosing a new strap I look at the style of the watch and also consider how I am going to wear it.  For watches that I wear every day I prefer a leather strap. I find these more comfortable to wear for long periods that metal bracelet straps.  There are some really lovely leather watch straps for sale online.  These range from classic tan, black and brown right through to some eye-catching colours including neon blue, bright green and purple.  This gives you plenty of choice and makes it easy to find the perfect watch strap for your wardrobe and tastes.

Before you buy new a watch strap you need to carefully check how the old strap fits to the watch.  This could be via small pins or through a snap-style connection.  You need to know this so you can pick a new watch strap with a similar fit.  Also look at the way in which the new watch strap clasps together.  I prefer buckle straps for leather straps as this offers a classic and secure look.  I am not so keen on butterfly clasps for leather and fabric straps as these can come unclipped sometimes without you realising and the watch could slip off your wrist and get lost.

When you are replacing your watch strap be methodical and take your time.  I normally place the watch on a soft plain towel whilst I am working so that I can see all the pieces I have taken off clearly.  This will also help to protect delicate parts such as the glass face from getting scratched.  If the watch strap has pins or screws make sure you set these aside in a small dish whilst you are working.  If you lose these small fixing pins or screws you may find it very difficult to get replacements.

Changing watch straps can be a wonderful way to update your timepiece.  You can transform the worn looks of classic and vintage designs or add a whole new style to your favourite watch.

Worn by an array of different celebrities, the De Ville Ladymatic is made of 18-carat red gold and is decorated with gorgeous diamonds. To show that it’s not just a pretty face, the watch’s automatic movement is COSC-certified by accuracy.

The only setback with the piece is that it costs some £18,000. It costs money to look money then eh.

In addition, there’s 163 carats of white and yellow diamonds in a flower shape, which brings it to the grand total of 201 carat; which is what they decided to call it. Classy!

Chopard Super Ice Cube

A watch anyone who thinks they’re cool, would be happy with the Chopard Super Ice Cube, and guess why? Because it’s shaped just like an ice cube. Crafted with a package of 66 gemstones including 60 carats of diamonds. With a price of $1.25million, it doesn’t get much more Hip than this…

Hublot

Hublot, the Ferrari of the watch world, spent 2000 hours (yes they counted it in hours) of meticulous hand-crafted workmanship on this little number. You’re looking at an 18 carat white gold case, combined with 322 grains of black gems, totalling 25 carats. The bad news is they only made one of the ‘Black Caviar Bang’, and you can’t buy it!

LeCoultre

If you want something a little more accurate and, like me, need to be able to time your meeting to 1000ths of a millimetre then look no further than the $404,000 dollar watch by visionary watch-maker Antoine LeCoultre. In pursuit of creating the most accurate time-keeping device ever made, this half a million dollar clock isn’t a watch, but a ‘micrometre’.

Lange & Sohne Tourbograph

With a massive 1097 individual moving parts, and a 41 jewel movement the German watch Lange & Sohne Tourbograph takes 30 days to put together and are made in their factory one at a time. It comes made of platinum or gold, with a sapphire crystal, an exhibition back and a crocodile band – but for $600,000 it is actually one of the cheaper watches on our list.

I know what you’re thinking; “these watches aren’t anywhere near expensive as I’d like”. Well, we have found one that just might be. The Emperador Temple will set you back a cool $3.3 million, and with over 1200 diamonds and mother of pearl on it you can see why! Manufactured by Piaget in 2012, it’s hailed as the one of the world’s most expensive watch.
